The Italian central defender will miss his team’s clash with Spain on Saturday, due to injury.
As reported by Marca, Chiellini suffered a calf injury in training and has already left the Italian squad. Squadra Azzurra will have to face Spain without one of their best defenders, in a match that will be decisive for the first spot in group G of the World Cup qualifiers.
The Italian Soccer Federation announced that the player will return to Turin, to undergo further investigations and treat the injury with the medical staff of his club. Therefore, Chiellini will miss both the match against Spain and the one against Israel on Tuesday.
Spain and Italy went head to head in Group G, winning every game they played, except for the direct one, which ended 1-1 in Turin, last October. Spain captain Sergio Ramos anticipated the clash in the pre-match press conference: “Italy are a great side, not just in defence, although they have always been renowned for being solid and difficult to beat, but they also have a lot of quality in attack.
Tomorrow so much is at stake, we’re playing for the right to be at the World Cup, but we’re at home, at the Bernabeu, which is an imposing stadium and I’m sure we’ll have a lot of support.
It’s going to be a special day for football fans, it’s one of the best games to see in the world, but we’ll try and stick with our usual playing philosophy to try and get the three points.”
